Distance from Nairobi to Nyeri
Nyeri sits about 160 km north of Nairobi, so allow a generous buffer for the drive. The park as a whole is about 150 km from Nairobi. The two numbers refer to different points, so do not mix them up.
The park headquarters is 15 km from Nyeri on the Nyeri to Nyahururu road. An airstrip at Mweiga lies opposite the headquarters. Gates are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with an exception for overnight guests, so start early. If you would rather not drive, compare Aberdare safari tours, which handle the route for you.

Nairobi to Nyeri and the park gates
Two ways in, and one by air.
| Approach | Route | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| From the east | Through Nyeri and Naro Moru | The usual approach to the eastern gates and the park headquarters |
| From the west | From the Naivasha side | Do not assume you can drive straight across the park |
| By air | Mweiga airstrip, opposite the headquarters | Do not count on scheduled flights; ask your lodge or a local operator |
For most visitors from Nairobi, the eastern approach through Nyeri is the simplest choice. Use the western side if you are already near Naivasha, where Lake Naivasha covers the roads.

Roads and vehicles
Two numbered roads help with orientation. The B20 runs from Dundori through Ol Kalou to Njabini, and the B21 runs from Nyahururu through Ndaragwa to Nyeri. Some maps show other road numbers, so rely on place names and signs on the day.
A 4x4 is the usual advice for park tracks, especially after rain. Check at the gate whether your vehicle will manage. Vehicle fees per day in 2026 are KES 600 for vehicles under six seats and KES 1,500 for six to twelve seats. Adult entry for non-residents is $70 and $40 for children, with a visit valid for up to 24 hours. You can pay through KWSPay or eCitizen, using M-Pesa, Visa or a bank transfer, so plan for cashless payment. For the full tariff, see park fees.

Arriving in Nairobi
Where most international trips begin.

International flights land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Wilson Airport is the other Nairobi airfield, used mainly by smaller aircraft. Both are on the Nairobi side of the trip, so allow time to leave the city before you head north. More about the capital and its parks is at Nairobi National Park and the capital.
Entering Kenya in 2026
Short points to check before you book.
eTA
Most visitors need an electronic travel authorisation. Some nationalities and permit holders are exempt. Processing takes about three days, and applying at least two weeks before travel is advised.
Travel health insurance
Since October 2026, most visitors staying under 12 months need state travel health insurance, arranged through the eTA or eCitizen and valid for 90 days. A foreign policy does not replace it. Residents, East African Community citizens and transit passengers who do not enter are exempt.
Yellow fever
Proof of vaccination is required if you arrive from a yellow fever area. Check whether your route counts.
Travel advice
The United States currently rates Kenya as Level 3, Reconsider Travel, citing health, traffic and unrest. That is a national notice, not a park closure. Germany's Federal Foreign Office warns of land-rights conflicts in Laikipia and neighbouring counties, which matters if you head to Nyahururu, and mentions demonstrations and road risks. Read your own government's current advice, including health notices for arrivals through Nairobi.
Planning the day at the gate
Four things that save time on arrival.
Valid ID
Bring valid identity documents. Resident rates need proof of a valid Kenyan status, not just a long stay.
Pay before you arrive
Use KWSPay or eCitizen in advance if you can, so that the gate does not hold you up.
Know your gate
The eight gates are Ark, Treetops, Kiandongoro, Mutubio, Rhino, Ruhuruini, Shamata and Wandare. Confirm which one you will use and whether you can enter there on the day.
Leave time
Gates close at 6 p.m. Wet roads and mist slow a return drive, so do not plan a tight finish.
