Nyeri and Aberdare Weather

Nyeri weather follows two rainy seasons, and the high Aberdares add mist and cold on top. Here is how the year runs, what to pack and how to plan a park day around the rain.

Nyeri weather through the year

Nyeri has a long rainy season from March to May and a short one from October to December. June to August is the cooler stretch. These are climate patterns for the area, not a forecast for a particular week, so use them to choose a season and then check the forecast before you travel.

The weather station at Nyeri stands at about 1,768 m. That is a town and valley position, not a mountain one. The park rises well above it: ground over 3,000 m, and Ol Donyo Lesatima close to 4,000 m. Up there the air is colder, wetter and mistier than in town, and the Nyeri forecast tells you little about the summit. If you want a park ticket, gates and fees, the park fees page has them.

The seasons compared

Climate patterns, not a prediction for your dates.

PeriodMonthsWhat to expect
Long rainsMarch to MayThe wettest stretch. Tracks and trails can turn muddy, and mist is common on high ground.
Cooler monthsJune to AugustCooler air, and more so at altitude.
Short rainsOctober to DecemberA second, shorter wet period.
Between the rainsJanuary and February, and SeptemberRelatively less rain, though mountains make their own weather.

For most visitors who want park drives, the weeks between the rainy seasons are the easier choice. Hikers on the moorland should plan for mist and cold in any month.

Our pick: three days in the highlands

Three days with meals and two nights leave room for a misty morning, so one foggy start does not decide the trip.

Aberdare weather: mist, rain and cold on the high ground

What changes once you leave town.

Mist and wet ground

The high parts of the park can be misty and wet, whatever the season. The Kenya Wildlife Service advises warm clothing, hiking shoes and a way to navigate. For hikes, a ranger is part of the plan, so read our Aberdare hiking guide before you set off.

Driving in the rain

Rain makes park tracks slower. Gates run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., so leave extra time when the ground is wet and do not leave a late start to chance. A 4x4 is the usual advice for park tracks.

Views

Clouds can hide the peaks for hours. Forest road and moorland views depend on how much cloud there is on the day.

Park drives

Easier between the rainy seasons, when tracks are less likely to be wet. Even then, a 4x4 is the usual advice.

Hiking

The moorland is exposed in every month. Choose a drier stretch if you can, take a ranger and leave a margin for mist.

Waterfalls

Visit when the ground is firmer. Paths in wet weather are slippery, and nobody should swim.

The Kenya Meteorological Department publishes seasonal outlooks. Check the latest one before you travel, as the timing and strength of the rains vary from year to year.

What to pack for the Aberdares

Layers matter more than any single item. Pack a warm layer, a waterproof jacket, hiking shoes with a good grip and a way to find your route, as the park advises. Bring the same kit for a day on the moorland as for a trek, because conditions can turn quickly at altitude.

Mount Kenya, the neighbouring mountain, has its own weather page at Mount Kenya weather. If you are choosing between the two, plan the high-altitude days for the stretches between the rains.

Nyeri and Aberdare weather: frequently asked questions

When are the rainy seasons in Nyeri?

The long rains run from March to May and the short rains from October to December. These are typical patterns, not guarantees for a given year.

What is the best time to visit the Aberdares?

No single month is always right. The periods between the rains have relatively less rain and suit most park visits. In the mountains, mist and cold can occur in any month.

Is it cold in the Aberdares?

It can be. The park rises well above 3,000 m, and the high ground is colder, wetter and mistier than Nyeri town. Pack warm clothes even if the town feels mild.

Does the Nyeri forecast apply to the moorland?

Not directly. The town sits at about 1,768 m, and the moorland is far higher. Use the town forecast as a guide only, and expect worse conditions up high.

Can mist stop a park visit?

Mist slows driving and hides views, but it is not the same as a closure. Ask at the gate or your lodge about current track conditions, and leave extra time before the 6 p.m. gate closing.

What should I pack for the Aberdares?

A warm layer, a waterproof jacket, hiking shoes with a good grip and a way to find your route. Bring the same kit for a day on the moorland as for a trek, because conditions can turn quickly at altitude.
