Aberdare hiking: what to arrange first
Aberdare hiking happens in two worlds. The lower slopes are forest. Higher up the ground opens into moorland with tussock grass, shrubs and giant lobelias, and the summit ridge of Ol Donyo Lesatima reaches about 4,000 m. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) manages the park, and its walks include the Satima and Elephant Hills trails, which start at Shamata Gate, as well as Kinangop and other peaks.
Do not plan to walk alone. Arrange a ranger escort with KWS before you go and ask which route is open on your dates. If you would rather see the park from a vehicle, look at Aberdare safari tours and game drives first. The same park entry fee applies to both.

Our pick: the Mount Satima summit hike
This hike climbs to the top of Mount Satima over the Dragon's Teeth trail, with the park fees already in the price.

Ol Donyo Lesatima (Satima Peak)
The summit has two names and stands at about 4,000 m.
One mountain, two names
Ol Donyo Lesatima is the full name. Many hikers shorten it to Satima, and the trails are called the Satima trails. Its height is 3,999 m or 4,001 m, so treat it as about 4,000 m.
The approach
The Satima trails start from the Shamata side of the park. Walking times and trail length are set by the rangers on the day, depending on the route, the group and the weather. Ask for these figures when you book the escort instead of relying on a general number.
What you pass
The park combines forest, moorland and ravines. On the high ground you find tussock grass, shrubs and rocky outcrops. Wildlife can appear anywhere, which is another reason to walk with rangers.
The second peak
Kinangop, at 3,906 m, is the other well-known summit. It has its own guide, because the name also covers a plateau and a sub-county.

Ranger rules and fees for hikers
Amounts are the KWS tariff in force since 1 October 2025, valid in 2026. Fees can change, so confirm them when you book.
| Item | Amount (2026) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Park entry, adult, per day | $70 non-resident, KES 800 East African citizen, KES 1,100 Kenya resident | Valid for one entry, up to 24 hours |
| Park entry, child | $40 non-resident, KES 500 East African citizen, KES 675 Kenya resident | Children up to 5 years are free |
| Ranger security escort, up to 4 hours | KES 2,000 | Minimum of 2 rangers |
| Ranger security escort, over 4 hours | KES 4,000 | Confirm whether the price is per group or per ranger |
| Fishing, per rod | KES 1,500 or $15 to $50 | On top of park entry; ask which amount applies to you |
For most visitors, the cleanest plan is an early start with an escort booked for up to 4 hours, plus the day's park entry, and a written price from KWS before you travel. Entry is paid through KWSPay or eCitizen, which accept M-Pesa, Visa and bank transfer.
Weather, clothing and trail safety
The high Aberdares are often misty and wet. Mist can come in within minutes and hide the path. KWS advises warm clothing, proper hiking boots and a way to navigate. Take waterproofs and a hat even if the sky is clear in Nyeri, because the town does not tell you what the summit is doing.
Gates are open from 06:00 to 18:00 unless you are staying overnight in the park. That makes an early start the practical choice. Keep to the paths and give animals room: the park rule is a minimum of 20 m from wildlife. Do not feed animals, and leave single-use plastic at home, as it is not allowed in the park.
Check the weather and best time guide for the seasons. If you are comparing mountains, Mount Kenya's trekking routes are a separate trip with their own guide.

Trout fishing in the streams
Brown and rainbow trout live in the park's streams.
Fishing is the quieter alternative to a summit day. Anglers pay a fee per rod on top of park entry. Rod fees range from $15 to $50 for non-residents and are KES 1,500 for the Kenyan categories, so ask KWS which one applies and whether a licence is available on your dates. Catch limits and closed seasons need to be confirmed with the rangers too.
Aberdare hiking: frequently asked questions
Can I hike in the Aberdares without a ranger?
Plan for a ranger escort. KWS expects walkers to be accompanied and to arrange the walk in advance, so do not set off alone on any trail. Ask about the route you want before you travel.
How high is Ol Donyo Lesatima?
About 4,000 m (3,999 m or 4,001 m). Kinangop is 3,906 m. Both are high enough for cold, wind and mist even in the dry season.
How long does the Satima hike take?
The rangers can tell you for your route and group. Do not rely on a general number, as the weather and your pace change it. The escort tariff is KES 2,000 up to 4 hours and KES 4,000 beyond that.
What should I bring?
Warm layers, waterproofs, a hat and gloves, hiking boots, water and a way to find your route. Mist and rain are common at height.
Can I fish in the Aberdare streams?
Yes, brown and rainbow trout live in the park's streams. Anglers pay a fee per rod on top of park entry (KES 1,500 or $15 to $50, depending on category). Confirm catch limits and closed seasons with the rangers.
