Nyeri town at a glance
Nyeri town is the administrative centre of Nyeri County. Town and county are not the same thing: the county is the larger area, the town is its urban core. Coffee, tea and horticulture are the main cash crops of the surrounding farmland, which gives the hills their patchwork look.
The town sits about 160 km north of Nairobi. The national park is not in the town centre. The park headquarters is about 15 km from Nyeri on the Nyeri to Nyahururu road. If the park is the main reason for your trip, start with our guide to Aberdare safari tours and use Nyeri as the base.

Things to do in Nyeri
The town is small on sights but strong on history.
Baden-Powell's grave and Paxtu
Lord and Lady Baden-Powell are buried in Nyeri, and Paxtu, his last home in Kenya, stands in the grounds of a hotel. It is the best-known historic stop in town.
Baden-Powell guide โThe Dedan Kimathi monument
The county places the monument at the Kahigaini site. It is not the well-known statue in Nairobi, so do not expect a city-centre landmark. Ask locally for directions and opening times before you go.
Mau Mau history โCoffee and tea country
The farmland around Nyeri is coffee, tea and vegetable country. Farm visits and tastings are arranged locally, so ask at your accommodation rather than counting on a fixed schedule.
The Aberdares
The park is the reason most visitors come. Forest, moorland, gorges and waterfalls fill the mountain range behind the town, and Nyeri is where the eastern approach starts.

Nyeri as a base for the Aberdares
The park has eight gates: Ark, Treetops, Kiandongoro, Mutubio, Rhino, Ruhuruini, Shamata and Wandare. Which of them suits your plan depends on where you stay and what you want to do, so confirm your gate in advance. Gates are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and a day ticket gives access for up to 24 hours.
Nyeri also works for the historic side of a trip. Grave, cottage and monument sit close to town, so you can fit them around a park day. Mount Kenya is the neighbouring mountain and has its own guide at Mount Kenya National Park. On a clear day the peaks can show on the horizon above the farmland.

Which base suits your trip
Three bases around the Aberdares.
| Base | Position | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Nyeri town | About 15 km from the park headquarters | Historic sites, town services, eastern gates |
| Park headquarters area | On the Nyeri to Nyahururu road, with an airstrip opposite | Short transfers into the park |
| Nyahururu | Reached from Nyeri by the B21 via Ndaragwa | Thomson's Falls |
For most first visits, Nyeri is the simplest base: it is close to the park headquarters and to the Baden-Powell sites. Choose Nyahururu if Thomson's Falls is your main goal.
Nyeri and the forest war
Why the town matters to Kenyan history.
The Aberdare forests were the setting for much of the Mau Mau struggle in the 1950s. Dedan Kimathi was captured on 21 October 1956 near Kahiga-ini, in the Nyeri area, and executed on 18 February 1957 at Kamiti. The spelling of the place name varies, but it is one event, not several. The monument that the county places at the Kahigaini site belongs to this story. Treat it as a place of remembrance and ask locally how to visit.
The park keeps a link to the period too: a fig tree served as the Mau Mau post office, where messages were left in its hollows. The Mau Mau page and the park history go into more detail.
Before you drive in from Nyeri
Four practical points for a park day.
Start early
Gates close at 6 p.m. A morning start from town leaves you time for the park and the drive back.
Pay ahead
Park fees are paid through KWSPay or eCitizen, with M-Pesa, Visa or a bank transfer. Plan for cashless payment.
Carry ID
Valid identity documents are needed at the gate, and residents must be able to prove their status. A long holiday does not make you a resident.
Check the gate
Ask your accommodation which gate fits your plan and whether it is in use.
