Where to stay: the options at a glance
Inside the park you find fishing lodges, public and special campsites and private lodges. Outside the park, Nyeri hotels are the usual base for the eastern side. The choice is mostly about location and time: a lodge or camp saves the early drive to the gate, and a Nyeri base gives you the town and its historic sites.
Whatever you choose, the park entry fee is separate unless a lodge tells you otherwise, so ask what the rate includes. If you are still deciding how to see the park, compare Aberdare safari tours before you book a bed.

Aberdare lodges
Private lodges in the forest zone of the park.
The lower eastern part of the park, called the Salient, has forest and lodges built around waterholes. This is a different landscape from the open moorland on the summits. Lodges here suit guests who want to watch animals from a balcony or a viewing area at dusk and at night, with a stay that begins and ends inside the park.
Do not assume that a lodge is the only one in the park, or that a night is available on your dates. Ask each lodge whether park fees and transfers are included in the rate. The best-known waterhole lodges have their own page, with their history and 2026 status.

What a lodge stay looks like
Expect a view of the forest or a waterhole and a timetable shaped by the park gates. Overnight guests are the exception to the 6 p.m. gate closing, so you can arrive for the evening, but check late arrival rules with the lodge.
Our pick: a trip with the lodge stay included
This four-day trip includes a lodge with a waterhole view, so the bed is already part of the price.

Aberdare camping
Public and special campsites, 2026 fees per person.
The park has public campsites at Reedbuck, on the moorland, and at Ruhuruini. It also has special campsites. Camping fees are charged per person and come on top of the entry fee. Figures are adult / child.
| Visitor | Public camp | Special camp |
|---|---|---|
| East African citizens | KES 200 / KES 150 | KES 250 / KES 200 |
| Kenya residents | KES 300 / KES 200 | KES 350 / KES 250 |
| Non-residents | $20 / $15 | $35 / $20 |
| African citizens | $10 / $8 | $20 / $10 |
Reserving a special camp costs KES 10,000 per week and is not refundable. That is a separate item from the per person fee. Reedbuck sits on the moorland, so expect cold and mist. Read the weather page before you pack.
For most visitors without their own camping kit, a lodge or a Nyeri base is simpler. Camping suits self-sufficient travellers who are comfortable with cold nights and weather.
Nyeri hotels as a base
Nyeri is the administrative centre of its county and the usual base for the eastern gates. The park headquarters lies about 15 km from the town on the Nyeri to Nyahururu road, and the Baden-Powell sites are close by. Choose a place near the road you will take in the morning, since the gates close at 6 p.m. and a park day is easier with a short drive.
A day ticket gives access for up to 24 hours, so a stay in town means you pay the entry fee for each day you drive in. Look at the Nyeri town guide for the town's sights, and at where to stay near Mount Kenya if you combine both mountains.

Which option suits you
By type of trip.
| Option | Where | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Private lodge | Forest zone of the park | Waterhole evenings without a transfer |
| Public camp | Reedbuck on the moorland, or Ruhuruini | Campers with their own kit |
| Special camp | Inside the park, with a weekly reservation fee | Campers who want to reserve a site |
| Hotel in Nyeri | About 15 km from the park headquarters | History, town services and day trips |
For most first-time visitors, a base in Nyeri plus a day trip is the simplest plan. Choose a lodge if the waterhole evening is the point of your trip.
