Aberdare safari at a glance

An Aberdare safari is a drive through mountain forest and along streams, with the chance of elephant, buffalo, leopard and other animals. It is not the open savanna of the big plains parks. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) offers game drives and trekking in the park, and tour operators sell day trips and longer safaris that include the drive.

Wildlife sightings depend on the forest, the weather and luck. Good chances are the most anyone can offer, and a quiet day still gives you waterfalls and mountain views. Entry in 2026 is $70 for a non-resident adult and $40 for a child, plus a vehicle fee. See the park fees for the full tables.

What a game drive in the Aberdares is like

The eastern part of the park, the Salient, is forest with waterhole lodges. Higher ground is open moorland and peaks. Elephant, leopard and bongo live in the park, along with black rhino, buffalo, giant forest hog and black-and-white colobus monkeys. More than 250 bird species have been recorded as well.

None of this is a promise. The forest is dense, animals can be hard to spot and mist can hide the view. A guide who knows the tracks improves your chances. For more on the animals, see the wildlife page.

For most first-time visitors, a guided drive or tour that handles the gate, the vehicle fee and the route is the simplest choice. Self-drivers should confirm the gate with KWS first. Four-wheel drive is the usual advice for park tracks, although no general rule requires it.

What to check when you choose an Aberdare safari tour

Tours differ in what they include, so compare the details and not only the price. A price quoted per person is not the same as a price for a whole vehicle, and a group price should never be read as a per-person price.

  • Park entry: $70 for a non-resident adult and $40 for a child in 2026. Some tours include it, some do not.
  • Vehicle fee: KES 600 per day for a vehicle with fewer than 6 seats, more for larger groups.
  • Timing: the park is about 150 km from Nairobi and the gates are open from 06:00 to 18:00, so ask when the tour starts and when it returns.
  • Payment: entry is paid through KWSPay or eCitizen by M-Pesa, Visa or bank transfer.
  • Season: the long rains fall from March to May and the short rains from October to December. Mist and rain can affect any month, so check the cancellation terms.

If you plan to hike on the moorland instead of driving, read the hiking guide, because rangers are part of that plan.

Park rules for safaris

  • Keep at least 20 m from wildlife.
  • The speed limit is 40 km/h.
  • Stay on roads and tracks. Driving off-road is not allowed.
  • Leave your vehicle only in designated areas.
  • Do not feed animals.
  • Single-use plastic is not allowed.
  • Gates are open from 06:00 to 18:00, with an exception for overnight guests.

These rules protect both you and the animals.

Combine the Aberdares with other parks

Some visitors pair the Aberdares with nearby parks. Mount Kenya tours cover the mountain, and safaris at Ol Pejeta cover open savanna. Check how long each leg takes before you book, because the roads between them add driving time. Costs for the Aberdare day are on the fees page, and the road from Nairobi is on the getting there page.

Aberdare safari: frequently asked questions

Can I see the Big Five in the Aberdares?

Not reliably. Elephant, leopard, buffalo and black rhino live in the park, but sightings depend on the forest and luck, and nobody can promise a full set. Plan for a forest safari rather than an open plains safari.

Is there a night drive?

A night game drive tariff exists: KES 3,000 for East African citizens and residents, or $50 for African citizens and non-residents. That does not mean a night drive runs every day, so ask your operator whether one is possible on your date.

Can I drive myself?

Yes, if you pay the entry and vehicle fees and follow the rules. Confirm your gate with KWS, expect forest tracks and ask about road conditions after rain. A guide helps if you want to find animals.

Do I need to book the tour in advance?

Entry itself is paid through KWSPay or eCitizen. Tours and lodges are booked separately, so reserve those in advance and check what each includes.

What should I wear and bring?

Warm layers, rain protection and sturdy shoes. High ground can be misty and wet, and gates close at 18:00, so allow time to leave.
